Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd in countries around the world to support environmental protection, care for, and show love for our Earth. It began in many places in 1970 with support from the United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, peace activist John McConnell, Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations, Denis Hayes, and others.

Today, Earth Day events occur in more than 193 countries. Many places celebrate Earth Week. The March for Science is occurring on April 22, 2017 in Washington, D.C. and numerous other cities. The People’s Climate Mobilization is occurring on April 29, 2017 as well.

Earth Day begins to be honored and celebrated in elementary School. As a former teacher, I can attest to the fact that what began with many teach-ins continues in classrooms today. From learning about how to care for our environment to facts about pollution to doing a service project in the classroom, teachers are incorporating education and celebration of our Earth.

Do celebrate Earth Day today and every day! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Picking up litter, planting, and taking care of the environment around you are ways everyone can participate. Be inspired! Have a bright day!
